Richardson Youth Leadership (RYL) is a program for high school juniors attending a RISD high school or another non-public high school student living in Richardson or the RISD boundaries. Throughout the school year, students spend one afternoon a month at various sites in the Richardson area learning about their community. Activities are designed to develop leadership and teamwork skills. Session topics include a range of leadership, social and cultural issues including volunteerism, education, city government, business, health care, and criminal justice. Current sophomores may download the application and recommendation forms from www.lralumni.com or may also contact an RISD counselor for information and forms. The application deadline for the 2015-2016 program is March 31, 2015.
Why Richardson Youth Leadership?
RYL is a program developed by the Leadership Richardson Alumni Association (LRAA) in cooperation with RISD, which offers you an exciting opportunity to develop your leadership potential. Through participation in hands-on activities, you will enhance your awareness of the dynamics of our highly complex, rapidly changing technological and global society.
How Can I Be Selected?
Current sophomores will be selected for the program based on applications and letter of recommendation from a school staff member, an employer, or other person in the community. Participants will be chosen by a Selection Committee appointed by LRAA. Students will represent a cross-section of the RISD community. RISD students will earn 1.0 local credit on their transcripts after successful completion of the program.
Students applying for the program must have an interest in acquiring leadership skills and be willing to make a significant time commitment. Cost for the program is $175. Scholarships are available for students who qualify. Contact your counselor for more information.
The program meets once a month, commonly on the second Wednesday from 12:30-5:00 PM. There is also a mandatory Saturday, usually in August, of leadership training and team building. Students may not miss more than two sessions to complete credit and graduate from the program.
What is Leadership Richardson?
Leadership Richardson is a community leadership development program for adults, created by the Richardson Chamber of Commerce in 1985 to bring together a cadre of emerging community and business leaders encouraging each other to learn, question, dream about, and care for their community. By better understanding the city’s strengths and weaknesses, LR members can make their own investments in its future through their own leadership commitment.
