Stay informed and stay connected!

February 2021

LR Class 35 had the opportunity to re-do their Public Safety Day on Friday January 30th.  Due to COVID restrictions, the class had to improvise with a half-day virtual Public Safety Day last May.  Thanks to the Richardson Fire Department and the Richardson Police Department, the class experienced many of the exciting aspects that day traditionally offers.

Judging by the smiles on their faces, it looks it was worth the wait!

Big shout out and thank you to the City of Richardson for making this happen for Class 35!

The iDream program exploded in growth this year, thanks to problem-solving in the face of a pandemic, which resulted in virtual, online presentations.

About 2,000 students from 25 elementary schools met with dozens of industry leaders from across the country  as part of iDream 2021, a partnership between the Richardson Independent School District and the Richardson Chamber of Commerce. About a quarter of the panelists were LR graduates!

iDream is a one-day career event held in January for sixth-grade students to learn more about opportunities available after high school. Students connect with business professions to hear about career opportunities in areas including business, marketing, finance, health science, STEM, hospitality, public service, architecture, construction and education.

Thank you to Leadership Richardson for modeling the way!

Suzanne Etman

Where has your leadership journey taken you, since your service year as the President of LRAA?

As soon as that year, my sixth of two, three-year terms of serving on the LRAA Board of Directors ended, I joined the RALC Board for three years and following that term, I joined the Network of Community Ministries Board of Directors for several years, the final year on the Executive Board. I just recently joined the Leadership Richardson Advisory Board.

What are you doing today and how do you think LRAA has influenced you?

Since I recently retired for the second time, I am volunteering a lot more in places I never could before and I'm able to do that more during the daytime which I really like. Last week I was stocking shelves in Network's food pantry and tomorrow I'll be at Fair Park all day assisting with people getting COVID vaccinations.

Thinking back to your year in the LR class and your service on the LRAA Board of Directors, what do you recall as your favorite memory?

My favorite memory of LR Class 18, the perfect class of 18 women and 18 men, was our retreat at Camp Summit. We were the last class that stayed overnight. By far, my favorite memory while serving on the LRAA Board of Directors was helping with the planning and execution of the LRAA 25th Anniversary Celebration. It was so much fun and a huge success.

As LRAA President (or since, as a Past President), what are some lessons you’ve learned and how could they help a future President for the Leadership Richardson Alumni Association?

Be open and listen to all ideas no matter how foreign they are to you. Delegate tasks - you'd be amazed at the creativity it brings out in others. Work hard, be humble, compliment often and never settle for anything but your very best.

What are your favorite leadership books, podcasts, TedTalks, etc that you recommend to other (aspiring) leaders?

I really can't say that I have any recommended books, podcasts, or TedTalks. You will already be among good and aspiring leaders in your class. And you will hear from many good leaders in your monthly sessions. I'm dating myself, but I read the entire Dallas Morning News every day. It keeps me educated, informed and able to converse or write about any current issues. So many times, this daily input of knowledge has enhanced and positively influenced my work.

What is your “call to action” to the current LRAA membership?

Stay connected and participate in LRAA. Leadership growth opportunities don't end with your LR class graduation. The connections you made will multiply exponentially and so will the friendships and fun times.
